The boom of online audio and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
According to a study conducted by IAB Spain in 2018 about digital trends, online audio is a new rising advertising form and at the same time the AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is gaining more relevance in the digital marketing world.
This Christmas, the sales of voice technology displays such as Google Home and Amazon Echo have skyrocketed. Their virtual assistants are Siri, Alexa or Google Now and they are leading the path towards a more “hands off” world because step by step they are helping users to do more things with their voice and not their hands.
Simple questions as “What’s the weather going to be like today?” or “How’s traffic on the way to work from home?” can now be answered by assistants like Siri, Google Now or Cortana, saving time to users.
They are slowly entering the Spanish market, and according to the “II Estudio de Audio Online de IAB Spain” 41% of digital marketing professionals keep those devices in mind and add them to their marketing strategies.
Asking questions to voice technology smart speakers is trendy. More than half of Spaniards use their smarthphones to look for things with virtual assistants, a number that has been growing since those devices arrived in 2011 for Apple and in 2016 for Android.
This is a great opportunity because web developers have seen a big possibility for AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), a close friend of SEO, but oriented towards helping virtual assistants choose the best positioned web and give that answer to their users.
AEO is not going to substitute SEO, but it’s gaining more relevance. Now it’s not only about positioning your web for search engines but also for answering engines. In fact, Google is optimizing it’s logarithm to follow up with AEO’s growth, which has to be as exact as possible to know exactly what every web offers.
For example, if we ask a virtual assistant “Which is the cheapest Japanese restaurant in Alicante?” the answering machine will have to know the menu and the prices of the restaurant in order to decide which one is the cheapest. And if the users asks, “Which is the best sushi of Alicante?” the assistant will recommend the restaurant that it know for sure that have sushi in their menu.
That is why now content is more important than ever. Everything has to me optimized to ensure that our website is the first one chosen in both search and answer engines.
