Supermarket shelves: a battlefield
In today´s world escaping the war between manufacturer’s brands and store brands is impossible, and this is because of the fact that store brands are slowly dethroning those who thought they would be the eternal leaders.
This case resembles many situations of real life on political issues or even fairy tales, as » The Tortoise and the Hare» in which the character who has a position with more advantages is accommodated and the other one who has less chances of winning takes the lead. Just then, multinationals warning signs are activated, and this is what happened some time ago.
How big brands have reacted?
By joining to attack their rivals. The result has been campaigns in mass media channels leaders in audience as Telecinco and Antena 3, phrases like «we do not manufacture for other brands», platforms as conlasmarcas.com or studies like the one performed by ESADE in 2010 which is called “Impacto económico y social de las marcas de fabricante (en el mercado de gran consumo)», “Economic and social impact of national brands (in the mass market)”. » Here we can see a summary of some spots by Grupo Danone:
The solution is as simple as having the ability to adapt to the time and place, trusting the product that’s being sold. This has been the key of store brands and it is what manufacturer’s brands have to learn from them.
The key is reinventing constantly, seizing opportunities, optimizing products portfolio and brands, consumer’s opinion, being aware of your surroundings, seeking agreements and knowing how to react. All these things are essential for making manufacturer’s brands coexist and not just fight the flow to achieve that precious place: “the top of the mind” of consumers.
Consumers are not stupid and if we offer the best, they will choose it, of course according to their means.
