Gary Dahl, un publicista estadounidense que tuvo la idea de vender mascotas. ¿Mascotas? Dirás, ¡Pero si eso ya esta muy visto! Vale si, pero las mascotas que él vendía eran rocas, como oyes, rocas.
A mediados de los setenta, una noche en un bar, de esas que todos hemos tenido, Gary y sus amigos se estaban quejando de todo el tiempo que hay que dedicarles a las macotas, peluquería, veterinarios, pasearlos etc., entre los chistes que se suelen hacer en estas ocasiones alguno debió haber dicho algo como ¡Lo bueno que seria tener una roca como mascota! No se quejan, no las tendrías que pasear, no se enferman, estarían ahí siempre para ti, entre risas a Gary que era un emprendedor creativo, se le encendió “la bombilla”, y ¿Por qué no vendo rocas como mascotas?, cualquier otro habría pensado que era una tontería, pero él lo llevó a cabo y las bautizo como “petrock”.
A través de una gran presentación, con el humor de base, Gary diseño un caja con agujeros a modo de respiraderos en la cual venía la nueva mascota, acostada sobre una cama de paja, además junto con esto venía un manual de instrucciones para el nuevo miembro de la familia, se incluían trucos que ya sabía hacer la piedra sola como hacerse la muerta, sentarse, tumbarse y algunos que requerían de la ayuda del dueño como era rodar.
En lo económico, fueron todo un éxito, eran simples rocas de rió compradas como materiales de construcción que se vendían a 3,95$ cada una. Esta novedad duró en torno a 6 meses, donde llego a vender 1.5 millones de «petrock» e hizo de Gary millonario.
Claro, lo que él vendía no era un simple roca, era una idea, un chiste, una sonrisa en una caja y gracias a su gran estilo de marketing consiguió que fuese una moda, el regalo irónico perfecto. Hoy en día todavía se pueden conseguir las nuevas “petrock” que el ingenio de Gary nos dejo (aunque ahora incorporan USB) y que son el claro predecesor de las famosas tamagotchi.

Gary falleció el 23 de marzo de este año, a la edad de 78 años. Pero su ingenio siempre nos inspirará.
